St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's ushered in the Year of the Rooster with our annual Asian New Year Celebration! Students in the Mandarin Chinese program, from junior kindergarten through eighth grade, performed songs and dances to show off their language skills and share cultural traditions they are learning about in class.

The Asian New Year Celebration highlights not just traditional Chinese New Year festivities, but elements of other Asian cultures. Drummers from the New York Taiko Aiko Kai showcased the powerfully percussive Taiko drum, traditionally performed to drive away evil spirits. Dancers from Columbia Raas also performed a modern version of western Indian folkdance.

The school also welcomed other Columbia University performers, including Columbia University Lion Dance and its Wushu martial arts team.

The class of 2017 enjoyed the chance to perform the "Auspicious Popping of the Bubble Wrap," a right of passage afforded to the eighth grade each year.

A separate celebration was held for the early childhood program, allowing our youngest students to enjoy the festivities on a smaller scale.
