The annual Math Bowl united two teams of talented upper division math students in a friendly, game show-style competition, while students in the lower division joined "math buddies" from another grade for a morning full of math fun.
Upper school math teachers Bill Fallon and Libby Miles coordinated the competition, with assistance from the upper division faculty. Each of the two upper division teams ("Team X" and "Team Y") was comprised of one student from grades 4-7 and two students from grade 8. For eight rounds, students answered grade-specific questions, and at the end of each round, the teams collaborated on a group question. The mathematicians started out slowly, but in the second half, speed became an additional challenge. In the end, Team X edged out Team Y to capture a close win.
In the midst of the competition, a group of student musicians who called themselves "The Coordinates" entertained the crowd with a halftime show, performing a song entitled "Journeys of a Math Lifetime."
Meanwhile, in lower division classrooms, grade levels collaborated for a morning of math fun, with third grade students mentoring senior kindergarteners, second graders assisting nursery, and first grade working with junior kindergarten.
