An important goal of our program is to introduce our students to a second modern language, beginning in the nursery program.
St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's was the first elementary school in New York City to introduce second language studies during the early childhood years. In 2005, we introduced a pilot program to teach Mandarin Chinese to 3-year-olds; with the success of this program, now roughly a third of students in all grades are learning Mandarin.
Parents select from French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese, and their children take language classes two or three times a week depending upon their age. In the upper school, Latin is added to the program. Many of our graduates place in advanced sections in high school and continue their language studies in college.
