| | | Spiritual and ethical formation is the focus of our study of religion. When children have the opportunity to explore their spiritual natures, they come to understand themselves as important and beloved, and they are able to treat themselves and others with appropriate care and respect. |
| The Episcopal tradition of openness and inclusion is the basis of our program, and we take care to celebrate the religious and cultural traditions of all of our students and their families. |
Beginning in grade 1, students receive instruction in spiritual and religious education for one trimester per year with our school's chaplain and faculty. First grade students explore stories from the book of Genesis, the beginning of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. In grades 2 and 3, using a curriculum developed by the Tannenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, we study some of the world's major religions.
In grade 4, religious knowledge studies focus on the parables of Jesus, and in grade 5, we study the lives of modern-day saints. Grade 6 is the only year that religious knowledge classes are extended throughout the year, and we take a historical perspective on the development of major religions. In grade 7, we return to the trimester model and delve more deeply into study of the Bible. In grade 8, we examine theological issues of peace, reconciliation, and forgiveness.
