Basketball Hawks Excel On the Court

The Hawks continue a proud tradition of basketball excellence this winter, with five teams of sixth, seventh and eighth grade student-athletes taking the court. As of this writing, the 7-8 girls and boys teams, who play in the New York City Athletic League (NYCAL), are both undefeated and leading the league! The boys are off to a 7-0 start, while the girls’ record is 5-0.

The vast interest in boys basketball led to the creation of a second 7-8 boys “silver” team, which allows more boys the chance to play competitively. To augment the coaching staff, alumnus Marcus Welch ‘09 has returned to assist Coach Chris Laurent. “The team is representing us proudly as they get their season underway and improve with each game,” says Patti Lesser, Director of P.E. and Athletics.

Sixth grade basketball is the first chance that St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s students have to play competitive basketball as a member of a Hawks team. “This is such a positive way to start off their athletic careers, representing us as Hawks,” says Ms. Lesser. “Every game is another learning experience, and it is wonderful to watch these student-athletes develop as players, competitors, and teammates. We instill a lifelong love for being active, welcoming the challenge of competition, and understanding the responsibility of being a student-athlete."

Students have ample opportunities to play and practice. Saturday Hoops for SK through grade 8 is well attended, and Community Basketball on Tuesday evenings give parents, faculty, and even alumni the chance to take the court.
